Hey friends. It’s 2019.

I know, I have no idea how it happened either, but here we are. 

I bet you’re also seeing a TON of (like…so many) posts, ads, captions, more ads, about how you need to change. How you need to be better. Do better. Workout harder. Eat cleaner. New year, new you, or whatever. 

I get it. I’m feeling the pressure too, and it’s overwhelming.

But guess what? Your worth (or your health!) isn’t defined by a number on a scale or the tag on the back of your jeans or how many glasses of water you drink (although hydration is important so do keep drinking water). Your health is SO much more than your physical state. It’s so much more than your weight. You are so much more than the sum of those parts, and it can be so easy to forget. 

That’s why I’ve put together this little list of the 5 best health investments I made in 2018. None of them promise better abs (which is a good thing because if they did, they have not even kind of delivered), but they’ve all played a part, no matter how subtle, in making me feel just a little bit better this year. 1.) Regular visits with the chiropractor.  

I feel like the chiropractor is a very controversial topic, and everyone is fully entitled to their opinions. But for me? This has been a game changer. I’ve been pretty rough on my spine for years. Sleeping badly, not exercising, terrible (truly, truly terrible) posture, bad shoes, a handbag that weighs more than most adults — you get the picture. When I had x-rays done I expected to see maybe something wrong with my neck? I mean, I have headaches, it’s gotta be my neck right? Well, yes. But also my hips and lower back were in shambles. We’re talking bone spurs. A few weeks of regular visits and I have improved mobility, DRASTICALLY reduced headaches, and just generally feel much more human. This is a big, big win.  

2. CBD oil 

Yeah, it’s super trendy right now. But y’all — there’s a good reason. It’s magic. Everyone in my family uses it (including Paul Simon). I jumped on the bandwagon as an attempt to reduce my constant, nagging anxiety that seemed to linger forever and ever like a giant weight that parks itself right in my rib cage and refuses to budge. 

The good news? It helped ease the anxiety. To me, it felt like a block of ice melting. The even better news? It didn’t stop there. CBD oil helps me concentrate, it’s eased my asthma, it’s eased chronic pain, it’s helped with my memory, and SO much more. If you’re on the fence, jump off of it (with the approval of your physician, of course), and give CBD a try.

3. Beautycounter

Wait. Isn’t this makeup and skin care stuff? 

Yes, but! It’s also SO much more. First of all, it’s a bang-up side hustle. This job has changed my life for the better in countless ways. On the non-business side, these products are amazing. Not just from a performance standpoint (although, y’all. they’re good), but also from an impact standpoint. Did you know that the personal care industry hasn’t seen federal regulation in over 80 years? That’s a long time. Think of all the things we thought were okay 80 years ago that we would never do now. 4. Fitbit

I know, I know. I’m so late to the Fitbit party. But I got the Charge 3 in December, and I can’t tell you how much of a difference it’s made! Along with tracking my steps, calories burned, and how I sleep, it also buzzes every hour (not during sleep, of course) to remind me to get up and walk around. My goal is 250 steps each hour, and this has done a great job at keeping me from sitting in my chair at work for 4 hours straight (which has happened more than I like to admit). Highly, highly recommend. 

5. Essential oils 

Duuuuuuudes. I’m on this train in SUCH a big way. I always knew they had the ability to relax the body and mind, but I was just fine with buying lavender-scented stuff and telling myself I was reaping all the benefits.


I signed up with Young Living to get my hands on a starter kit, and have been completely obsessed with the benefits of these magic little bottles. There is a solution for EVERYTHING. Trouble breathing? Let’s get some Raven in your life. Weak immune system? I’m coming after you with a Thieves roller and you’re going to thank me later. Feeling anxious? A couple of drops of Valor in your hands + 20 deep breaths? You’ll feel a world of difference. These babies are diffusing in every room in my house pretty much all the time, and I can feel a true, genuine difference in my well-being.

Bonus #6! – Therapy. 

Y’all. It’s no secret that I’ve been through some heavy stuff in my life. It took me a very long time (29 years, to be exact) to begin prioritizing my mental health in any way. Now, I use a very carefully thought out combination of prescription medications and supplements to balance out the chemicals in my brain that make me feel imbalanced. I use physical activity to calm the anxiety, and I mediate when I feel like I need to clear my mind. 

Every single one of these tactics? I either learned about or was empowered to pursue through therapy. 

Here’s a little secret – we’ve all been through heavy stuff. My stuff probably doesn’t look like yours, and the other way around, but life comes at us hard and is ruthless and among all the beautiful is some really, really bad and therapy is an amazing resource to discuss both of those elements of life. 

You literally have someone on hand when you need them to listen to your problems and give you practical solutions to make your life better. It’s SO GOOD. If you have the capacity, give it a shot. As with most things, when you find the right match in a therapist, it can totally change your life. 


2018 was a very dynamic year. There were a lot of BIG emotions and BIG changes, and I’m looking forward to a little more balance in this year, but other than that I have very little idea what to expect.

As long as there’s more of this in 2019, I’ll be just fine.

What I do know is that I want to keep focusing on my health. My physical, my mental, my emotional health. All of it.
